THE LAW OF THE CHILD ACT, 2009
RIGHTS AND WELFARE OF A CHILD.
Under the Law of the child Act, 2009, a child is a person below the age of eighteen (18) years, and has the following rights.
- Right to live, free from any discrimination. A person shall not discriminate against a child on the grounds of gender, race, age, religion, language, political opinion, disability, health status, custom, ethnic origin, rural or urban back ground, birth, socio – economic status, being a refugee or of other status
- Right to a name, nationality, to know his/her biological parents and extended family.
- Is entitled to live with his parents or guardians.
- Right to food, shelter, clothing medical care including immunization, education and guidance.
- Liberty, the right to play and leisure.
- Not to be deprived reasonable enjoyment out of the estate of a parent.
- Right of opinion and to participate in decisions which affect his/her well being.
- Not to be employed or engaged in any activity that may be harmful to his/her health, education, mental, physical or moral development.
- Not to be subjected to torture, or other Cruel, Inhuman punishment or degrading treatment including any cultural practice which dehumanizes/is injurious.
